Before assuming his role as the general manager of  The Sukhothai Shanghai and Vice President of hotel operations at Sukhothai Hotels & Resorts, Thomas Schmitt-Glaeser garnered over 25 years of experience managing prestigious hotels worldwide, including the renowned Sukhothai Hotel in Bangkok.

Since you took over the management of the Sukhothai Shanghai, what changes have you made in customer services?


自你接手上海素凯泰的管理之后,你在客人服务上进行了哪些调整?

We have also enhanced the service in fitness center programs, where customers can have a targeted workout plans with a personal trainer and health-conscious dining options, so we are enhancing the overall experience for our customers.


在健身中心项目的服务上也有所提升,客人可以在私人教练的带领下,拥有针对性的训练方案,以及有健康意识的用餐选择。所以我们提升的其实是客人的整体体验。

On the other hand, we have increased our focus on wellness and well-being, which has led to a expansion of our wellness offering in spa, such as the addition of meditation, mindfulness or sound healing sessions to the existing treatments.


另外,我们提高了对于健康及身体疗愈方面的关注,并因此全面扩大了水疗中心所提供的健康服务,如在原有护理过程中增设冥想、正念或声音疗愈的环节。

In addition to providing customized room settings and personalized dining options, we invested quite a lot of time and additional resources in regular training and development programs for our staff to enhance their cultural sensitivities, communication skills and problem solving skills, making sure that they are always following the latest trends in the industry while providing exceptional services.


除了提供定制化房型、个性化的餐饮选择,我们还投入了大量的时间和资源以提升员工的文化素养与服务技能,确保他们时刻跟随行业的最新趋势而做出服务。

We pay close attention to the personalization and the personal preferences of our customers, so when we provide services, we would make timely adjustments to tailor ourselves to their individual preferences.


我们非常注重客人的个性化需求,所以在进行服务时,我们会根据他们的偏好及时做出调整。



How has your experience of running hotels in Europe influenced you?What do you think are the biggest difference between the hotel market in Europe and China?


在欧洲经营酒店的经历带给你怎样的影响?欧洲的酒店市场与中国最大的不同在哪里?

So as soon as you open a new hotel, you have new outlets, you have new rules, you have the latest trends. That is where everybody is going. We can see a lot of different offerings in hotel market in Asia that we do not see in Europe.


所以一旦你开设了一家新酒店,你就有了新的销售点、规则和新的趋势,这就是每个人都要去的地方。在亚洲的酒店市场上,我们能看到很多不同的产品,这是在欧洲所看不到的。

Whereas in China, you have to constantly respond to customer preferences and market trends, and the market is quite competitive. Perhaps 40% of hotel rooms in Shanghai do not meet occupancy rate because they are outdated and do not meet customer expectations.


而在中国,你需要经常应对客人的喜好与市场趋势做出反应,市场竞争相当激烈。上海可能有40%的酒店房间没有达到入住率,因为它们已经过时了,达不到客人的预期。

Moreover, the growth and development in Europe is much slower. They are reluctant to change due to the preservation of historical buildings. Some European restaurants may not have changed their furniture for 25 years, so it is difficult for the market to have a lot of expansion and a lot of growth.


另外相比起来,欧洲的增长和发展速度要慢得多。出于对历史建筑的保护,他们不愿意改变,有些欧洲的餐厅可能已经25年没有换过家具了,所以它的市场难有大的扩张和大量的增长。

The European customer base tends to have more international and diverse needs as the clientele coming from all over Europe have different habits. But in China, especially in the last three years, we are mainly targeting the domestic market.


欧洲的客户群往往有着更国际化更多样化的需求,来自欧洲各地的他们有不同的习惯。但在中国,特别是在最近三年,我们主要针对的是国内市场。

You have to work with different customer expectations. There are very clear differences between Europe and China.

In the past few years, what are the biggest trends that have changed in the hotel industry?What areas do you plan to explore and experiment with in the future?


在过去几年里酒店行业最大的变化趋势是什么?未来计划探索哪些领域?

Our attempts at the meditation and sound healing at the spa center will also be the one of the directions of our future exploration.


包括我们在水疗中心所进行的冥想与声音疗愈的尝试,也将是我们未来持续探索的方向。

Looking ahead, we are doing enhancements in our Thai restaurant, introducing spicier flavors with spices that promote both physical health and emotional well-being. 


我们已全面升级泰国餐厅的概念,口感更辣,但所用香料均有利于身体健康以及心理情绪健康,帮助人们降低压力水平。

With overpopulation and a renewed mindset in the hotel industry in big cities, there has been a significant shift of thoughts in wellness and self-care. People would like to have all the experiences when they are traveling while staying in the hotel.


随着人口过剩和大城市酒店行业的思想更新,人们的健康和自我护理概念也发生了重大的转变,人们希望在酒店内获得他们想在旅行时所经历的所有体验。

When you step into the Sukhothai, you will feel like being far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. From a design perspective, we have a clean and simplistic approach, which is very soothing to the eye. Most of our French furniture is made of metal and wood with geometric hanging lights, offering a relaxing and calming experience, almost like the atmosphere of a spa space.


当你进入素凯泰,就感觉远离了喧嚣和城市生活。设计上,我们尽量去繁就简,以有效地舒缓双眼;所选用的法国家具大多是用金属与木材制作的,并搭配几何悬挂灯,这令轻松和平静的体验成为可能,是一种可看到的平静,几乎像水疗空间的气氛。

Nowadays, people are tired of dark, wooden rooms and lobbies, and they focus a lot on the use of lights. This trend promotes us to create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere.


人们有点厌倦了昏暗的、充满木质家具的房间和大厅,他们非常关注灯光的运用。这一趋势促进我们创造一个更诱人的舒适氛围。

One significant trend has been a notable shift in design, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Modern hotel designs emphasize the integration of these spaces, allowing guests to experience a connection between nature and daily life.


首先设计上存在很大的变化,现在室内空间和室外空间之间的界限已经相当模糊了。许多现代酒店的设计都强调室内外空间的整合,以让客人看到自然与生活的联系。



What do you think is the most unique and attractive thing about The Sukhothai Shanghai?


在你心中,上海素凯泰最与众不同、最具吸引力的地方在哪里?

Far away from the traffic noise, everything is relaxed, even breathing seems a little easier. In such an environment, we create unique memory for our customers through humanized facilities and personalized services, which breaks the conventional concept of travel.


离城市交通的噪音,一切都变得很轻松,似乎呼吸都变得更容易了。在这样的环境下,我们通过人性化的设施与个性化的服务,为客人打造出了非常不一样的回忆,它打破了常规的旅行概念。
